Since I posted the article, I have received several interesting and helpful suggestions to gently encourage my memory back to normal. Really good to know and share information about keeping your memory up! “Keep up and you will be kept up”` Yogi Bahjan, applies to every part of your being!.
Hi Allison. I read your post about your surgery and memory concerns. I am so sorry to hear you’re being so challenged. I have actually been studying neuroscience for awhile and I have a few ideas that might help you heal your brain. I felt compelled to write this just in case some of it may be helpful. It seems to me that nutrition, energy healing, and of course, exercise may all play a role in healing your brain.
Specifically you might benefit from:
Response: 1. Detoxification- to get rid of any leftover effects from the anesthesia, you probably know you can do this with a really clean diet with lots of green vegies/jusices, or in more intense ways with detox programs- let me know if you want more info on this (there are also some very useful Essential Oils)
2. Probiotics- especially if you have taken antibiotics, could get some “leaky gut” resulting in toxins in the brain
3. Fish Oil and other good fats which are important for the brain
4. Ca and especially Mg important for brain function
5. Acupuncture and/or Healing Touch for energy healing/detox http://www.healingtouchcenter
6. Of course, exercise and meditation both promote growth factors in the brain
7. And, of course, focusing on your expectation of improvement beats adding worry to the mix as worry/stress tax the brain (that article you sent about post anesthesia memory loss was interesting but we don’t really know if it was anesthesia or something else that led to that woman’s brain damage)

The risk of POCD is one reason to avoid unnecessary procedures requiring general anesthesia. While your post-surgical memory problems will likely disappear over time, you might hurry that along by taking ginkgo biloba, which can enhance memory by increasing circulation to the brain. Take 120 mg daily in divided doses with food. You might also take phosphatidylserine (PS, for short). Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, medical director and president of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Foundation here in Tucson recommends taking 200 mg a day to augment the effect of ginkgo. (PS may have a blood-thinning effect, so use it with caution if you are on Coumadin or other prescribed anticoagulant drugs.) ~ Andrew Weil, M.D./Article

Response: I read your article,very interesting! I will seek out my anesthesia friends at work and discuss this. For you I would not panic. Pain and lack of sleep due to that pain also has a significant effect on the body and brain. Give it some time and when you are feeling better start to challenge your brain. Response: Hi Allison. I’m sorry to hear about your surgery and memory problems. There is a lot of literature written about POCD and so much unknown still. The theory is that general anesthesia weakens the immune system and you have history with your immune system in the past and I wonder about any correlation. If you had a nerve block, it should have reduced the amount of general anesthesia required quite a bit which is good, so I would suggest giving it a few weeks and continue what you’re doing to strengthen your mind and consult a neurologist if you are still having difficulty.
